HMO plans

HMO provides health services for a fixed annual fee. It provides or arranges managed care for health insurance, individuals health care benefits plans and other entitites. Health Maintenance Organization communicate a close working relationship with health care providers on a prepaid basis. It covers care rendered by the doctors and other professionals who have agreed to a contract to treat patients in accordance to the guidelines of the Health Maintenance Organization.Emergencies are covered regardless of the health care providers contracted status.


With an HMO you are often required to select a primary care physician. They are the gatekeepers to direct acces of medical services. There are different plans within the Health Maintenance Organization. Which does not require you to have a primary care physician such as "Open Access" and "POS". These products are a combination of an HMO and traditional indemnity plan. They are not required to have primary care physician. However, the cost may be higher for special care. Often with HMO's you have to have a referral from your primary doctor to seek care for a specialist
